Best Bet of the Day

No Bet

Just a quick message today. I dont fancy anything strongly enough to be an Account bet. VICEREINE (Newbury 3.45) looks my best "mention" at about 10/1 on the exchanges and 8/1 with the bookmakers. I,ve just backed it each way at 8/1 and pressed up at 10/1 to modest £90 Each Way stakes and a Top up win bet. I cant see the price being a problem, its a very open race and I would not stress about the horse if she drifts this afternoon as she is not that Fanciable to the form book guru's. I think she is worth a bet but she is not strong enough to stake on the account .I,m leaving it at that today as there is a busy weekend coming and I dont want to fritter away the money we have made this week on Guesses.

Football + Xmas £10

Firstly the Xmas £10 blows out at the first hurdle courtesy of the Spanish and I have to admit I have a set myself up for a very large slice of Humble pie and Egg on my face. Serious embarrassment this end so feel free to set the dogs on me. Like many of you I was praying to the God of Teletext whilst watching England play. (After Slovakia scored I had a rush of e mails in, coincidently all from Scottish Members who loved it). To the very Droll Marines who are also in the Tartan Army I would simply say I, like all my countrymen were with you in 1974 and nobody cheered Archie Gemmel more than me in 1978 and I'll never understand the Fun you get out of England struggling !! . Anyhow, huge embarrassment I accept, and that Bury's the Xmas £10 till next year. Up to now it did have a charmed life. We won it in 2000 but did not do it last year but we would have lost as I remember Martina Hingis at Wimbledon was going to be the first leg in 2002 and she lost. Having another go would be a bit pathetic this year so it's now history and we really ought to be concentrating on the main bets. Spain cost me a treble. It was a mug bet in hindsight. I'm putting it down to a moment of weakness and my long term Football record makes me despair.

Betting Forecast: 11/10 Approach, 6/1 Miss Ivanhoe, 7/1 Heavenly Bay, Vicereine, 15/2 Khaizarana, 8/1 Floreeda, 14/1 Flying Wanda, 16/1 Manama Rose, 250/1 Rouge Blanc.


This is the race I intend to play in today with an Each Way bet on VICEREINE Who I believe is excellent value after impressing me on Video. I like the fact she is a great price in a race where several of these cant win. FLYING WANDA Ran dreadfully on her debut and MANAMA ROSE Showed nothing close to what would be needed here and ROUGE BLANCE is a 250/1 chance. I also want to be against Henry Cecil's FLOREEDA. She could not beat a "60" rated Mark Brisborne handicapper recently and I'm sure she would want some cut in the ground and I expect Henry is just running her in memory of Lord Weinstock whose name the race is in honour of. MISS IVANHOE Looked to be impressive when winning a Nottingham maiden but the form of that race has been let down several times and she was easily beaten last time in a disappointing performance. She can't be ruled out but with Geoff Wragg you would have thought he would have sent her to Royal Ascot if she was anything special and I wonder whether coming here is a negative. HEAVENLY BAY and KHAIZARANA Come here having clashed 6 weeks ago when 2nd and 3rd in a listed race and both have chances but I just wonder whether both (especially Heavenly Bay) are a little too exposed now and not progressive enough and I just think this race is crying for a lightly raced type to win it . What you have is a very solid "Form" favourite in APPROACH From Mark Prescott's yard. It is true she is clearly the form pick on juvenile form, but you don't know how she has wintered, whether she has improved, how fit she is today and how flattered she may be from her form. She has been running behind some Big Names Fillies last year but she has been priced up on the horses ahead of her and not behind her and at 10/11 I'm happy to take her on as Prescott will not want her at her peak today and she may not be mentally tuned enough to hold VICEREINE. This Filly really took my eye at Bath. The Basic form of her maiden win was nothing special and she will need to improve a lot, but that looks assured. She was not suited by the race at Bath and she was hating the ground as well. It was rock hard and she was not happy on it but she did as much as she had to do and won, and at the end you could she had a ton in hand and she could be anything. John Gosden can improve fillies dramatically especially at this time of year and this step up in trip and easier ground will be right up her street. There are no runners here that have ran recently except her, so she has that mental and fitness edge and she is pitched in against perhaps only 4 possible winners and at 7/1 She cant be anything else but value. Gosden has won this race before and I really like his chance of winning it again this year. Its up to you whether you bet her each way if you do bet her . I Have but I am prepared for anything from a win to a heavy defeat.

Yesterdays Summary

THE JUDGE Won at 4/1 landing the BBOD and the first bet of the week. A Few points of note to make. There is no doubt about when I find it easier to give strong bets and summer and Fast ground and decent horses makes the job a lot easier. When we are on Fire, we are on Fire and I know from feedback that in terms of enjoying the service many of you are really happy and loving things. It is a shame It is not always like that. Remember back to the misery of the winter when it is cold and there is nothing to bet on and when you are wondering why your Southwell bet is held up 20 lengths off the pace on slow ground and you need a miracle to win . It's not a game you can enjoy for 12 months. That's really why I am charging nothing for the winter next year as you can go 4 months without a winner. If I can be patient and wait for the right winter bets and be careful and not play every day then I can turn the winter into a nice profit for you but it will have to be on those terms. The summer is always the time for bigger bets and you know that come next May when it starts up again properly that there is money to be made. Ascot next week wont be easy but I cant ever recall going into an Ascot with more confidence.
